Getting Used to the Place
![]() |
heres my problem:
I like alternative music, i find pop type music realy boring. Unfortunatly the only christian radio stations we have in invercargill either play pop or realy old crusty music. This greatly limits my christian music listening potential. I would like to get some christian band's cds to listen to instead but I dont know where 2 start looking for worthwhile artists. I kno there are ppl on this forum with similar music tastes so if you could suggest some good, non-pop, christian artists i would appreciate it greatly |

This is a good online Christian Radio Station with excellent music from Christian Artists. Un fortunately for you, they're an American based station so you may not know a lot of the artists. It's still really good though.

Sadly, there's really not a lot in the way of Christian Alternative music. The Christian music scene has always been about five years behind everyone else, so there's not much to appeal to any Christian that doesn't like Hillsong or ska. The only band I can think of off the top of my head is Mewithoutyou. If you do find any other good ones, please let me know.

His album Come On Feel The Illinoise has to be the best album of 2005. He's a Christian, and it's quite obvious in his lyrics, but don't tell the non-christian indie kids that as they think he's cool yet don't know that he makes many references to Jesus in his songs. It'll be our little Christian secret.

Haha, I loved your little reference there Tiberius about the non-christian indie kids such as myself. And Yeah, Illinoise is an amazing album. Casimir Pulaski Day makes me cry. And I didn't know he was a christian, even though I definatley see references in his music. I just didnt think to mention him.

"Alternative" encompasses such a broad array....A friend of mine introduced me to Circle of Dust, which is REALLY good...oh...industrio-techno-sorta-hardcore-gothic...? Great stuff to turn up loud. Lots of energy and grit and passion, and yet also a strange kind of dignity. And if you want some great Christmas music that's quite a bit off norm (not exactly hardcore, but with some marvelous electric guitar rock combined with passionate singing and even some layered chanting), I'd highly recommend Trans-Siberian Orchestra (used to be Savatage and carries on much of the tradition but with Christian themes). I've only heard their albums "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" and "The Lost Christmas," but those are both WELL worth a listen, and the rock-opera-style story behind the songs may well put tears in your eyes.
I'm one who'll listen to just about any genre of music and enjoy it (except most R&B), so I haven't looked really deeply into the bands involved in any particular style....

It kind of depends what kind of music you're into, and also if you want Christian music, or music by artists that are Christians.
If you like ska, which is totally my kinda thing, and you want Christian lyrics (AMAZING Christian lyrics), check out Five Iron Frenzy, easy to get a hold of at Koorong or most Christian bookshops with a decent music department. If you like ska and you just want artists who are Christian, check out Sounds Like Chicken. They're a bit heavier, but since they broke up their entire back catalogue is available for free download from their website- www.soundslikechicken.com.au Other cool bands: Anberlin Angela's Dish Antiskeptic If you want Indie and you live in Sydney, CHECH OUT THEFIFTHNATION!!! (www.thefifthnation.jenerate.com.au). They are fantastic. Or in the Brissie area, Maverick (indie/folk) (www.mavericksound.com.au).
